On the weekends of January 12-13 and January 26-27, the California Democratic Party will have elections for delegates to the CDP central committee. Seven women and seven people of other genders will be elected as delegates in caucuses in each Assembly district. The following video describes the process and the challenge:
The CDP has about 3300 delegates, one third appointed by state and national elected Democratic officials, another third from central committees and the last third elected directly by Democratic voters at bi-annual caucuses. Delegates elected this month will vote to 1) elect a new Chair for the CDP, 2) vote on the endorsement of candidates to the California Legislature and the US House of Representatives, 3) vote on the platform and structure of the party and 4) vote for DNC members.
Democratic Legislators are running slates with delegates to make sure that they get to stay in charge of the party, continue to be able to use it to launder campaign contributions, and assure that their endorsements are not challenged. Reportedly urged by Assembly speaker Anthony Rendon, they are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to make sure that our independent, #unbossed, progressive candidates are not elected.
The Berniecrat/progressive movement, meanwhile, is running our own slates of candidates trying to give ordinary people a say in the Democratic Party. We need everyone’s vote and support.
The following is the list of #unbought and #unbossed progressive candidates and slates that have the support of the Bernie movement and its ideological allies. These slates & candidates are mostly the same as those listed in the “official” site of the progressive movement, adems.vote – but while they list slates for all districts, we list individual candidates in districts that don’t have one single full, progressive slate.

The candidates listed above are solid progressives committed to fight for social, economic, racial, gender and immigration justice, as well as human rights and the environment. Bernie Sanders run for the presidency in 2016, mobilized thousands of Californians and brought them into the political system. About 200 of us became delegates for Bernie Sanders to the Democratic Convention, where we fought to push the Democratic Party to the left. After the convention, we set our sights into reforming the California Democratic Party and pushing Sacramento to pass more progressive legislation. Hundreds of Berniecrats and progressive allies ran for ADEMs in 2017 and we won hundreds of seats. For the last two plus years we’ve been working together and we’ve gotten to know one another, who is solidly progressive, and who is less so.
This list was compiled by Bernie delegate and Progressive California editor Margarita Lacabe with help from Katrina Bergstrom, Karen Bernal, James Elia, Cody Peterson, Juan JP Vazquez, Natalie Highley, Alfred Twu, Ana I. Gonzalez, Zach Denney, Tim Johnson, Robert Longer, Alison Flemings Buliavac, Kevin Lourens, Melissa Demyan, Carrie Scoville, Betty Doumas, Martha Camacho Rodriguez, Emily Cameron, Nicole Lutkemuller, Dominic Dursa, Natalya Jackon, Jean-Paul Wolfe, Jane Demian, Kelsey Pressnall, Ivan Enriquez, Glenn Glazer, Lucas De Sanctis Barton, Socorro Cisneros, Cathy Willot, Una Lee Jost, Caty Wagner, Victor García, Ron Birnbaum, Sarah Armstrong Saunders, Sal Cazarez, Jay Franco-Clausen, Marlin Medrano, Angel Rodriquez, Anne Mohr, Deborah Burger, Isaac Lieberman, RN, Kenji Yamada, Jorge Lopez, Jestin Samson, Jim Hesson, Jay Ariél Cortez, Greg Diamond, Morgan Lindsay Hannigan, Paul Seger, Mark Van Landuyt, Ava Kennedy, Gina Gates, Emma Jenson, Lorraine Salas, Phil Kim, Perry Lloyd, David Welch, Melissa Michelson, William Summerville, Johannes Münzel, and many other Berniecrats and progressive activists throughout the state. Names have been added and substracted as more information comes about. Whenever possible, we are including candidates who have a record of progressive activism and who will be independent of elected officials in casting their votes. Names in bold are those whose progressive activism is vouched for by the editors of this post.
Re AD 49, Boobie McGowan is not a progressive and should absolutely not be listed on this website. She is in bed with every corrupt, corporate local politician she can get her hands on. On her disgusting, corporate, faux-gressive slate are the following:
Chin Ho Liao, a San Gabriel citycouncilmember owned by local real estate interests from whom he took $10,000 in donations this last election cycle: https://www.sgvtribune.com/2017/02/21/who-is-donating-to-san-gabriel-city-council-candidates-campaigns/
Jerry Velasco, corporate El Monte citycouncilmember who in 2015 was involved in a drunk driving accident and subsequent request for worker’s comp which was handled improperly by the city: https://www.sgvtribune.com/2015/06/16/el-monte-council-investigating-city-treasurers-workers-compensation-case/
And the list goes on. She has made a concerted effort to exclude try money-out-of-politics Berners from her slate in favor of slimy, corporate-owned politicians. She should be removed from this list immediately. Please contact me if you require further information. Thank you.
We didn’t list the slate Bobbie is running in, precisely because it’s not an all-progressive slate. Unfortunately, in some districts it happens, and we find progressives running in problematic slates. In other districts, we have found that personal animosities and distrust between progressives have led them to run against each other. We have no intention of getting in the middle of that.
Instead, our approach is that if well known members of the Berniecrat/progressive movements are running against each other, instead of listing a slate, we will list the specific candidates we know to be progressive. And Bobbie showed herself to be one both as a fellow Bernie delegate in Philly, and as a CDP delegate for the last two years. She has been supportive of progressive initiatives, and a helpful ally, even if she is not the boldest voice out there.
Thank you Marga for your explanation. Bobbie may not have the boldest progressive voice, but she has managed to influence those around her to understand what progressive values are and why they are important. Little by little, those normally turned off by us are coming around.
Glad to see you got the “real” progressive slate in AD69, but why not include Mirvette Judeh’s slate in AD65?
I haven’t yet found anyone I know well to vouch for them. As soon as I do, they’ll be listed.
My comment is that I was surprised to see mostly all new names with a handful of repeats from two years ago. My question is what have the 200 progressive ADEMs we elected in 2017 accomplished in the last two years. Can you point to any progressive legislation they championed that got passed, any legislation that benefits corporations at the expense of people they were able to stop? What besides going to the required meetings of the CDP and voting on resolutions etc. did they actually do?
Yes. To name one, net neutrality. Wiener had introduced a bill to restore net neutrality in California, after it was killed by the Trump administration. The telecom industry is a HUGE donor to corporate Democrats and Miguel Santiago had orchestrated things to kill the bill in the Assembly. But at that time, Kevin De Leon was going for the Democratic endorsement – Santiago is Kevin’s mentee, they’ve both been generously supported by telecoms. So progressive delegates started calling on KDL to put pressure on Santiago to let the bill through. And they succeeded.
There are other examples, of course.
